Abraham Blank grew up in Detroit, the child of Jewish parents who had left Europe as displaced persons. He immigrated to Israel as a teenager and lived on a communal farm (kibbutz). His parents discouraged military service and Abraham, who was subject to the draft in both the United States and Israel, was advised by his parents to immigrate to Canada. His father drove him across the border at Windsor. Abraham enrolled in Ryerson College and graduated as an Urban Planner. Like most American expatriates of the time, he aligned himself with the New Democratic Party (NDP) and played an influential role in a critical election victory in Toronto in the middle 1970s. He was rewarded with a job in the Province of Saskatchewan where the NDP formed the government. He eventually returned to Toronto where he works as an Urban Planner.
